Four former SciFest participants talk to Dr Claire O’Connell about their experiences of SciFest, their SciFest projects, how participation in SciFest influenced their choice of subjects at 3rd level, what their ambitions are and finally they offer advice to students interested in participating in SciFest.


Caolann Brady was the overall winner of SciFest 2016 and went on to win a Second Place Category Award in Biomedical and Health Sciences in Intel ISEF 2017 in Los Angeles. Caolann is currently studying science in Trinity College.

Aaron Hannon was the overall winner of SciFest 2017 and representing Ireland went on to win a First Place Category Award in Embedded Systems at Intel ISEF 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Aaron is currently a Research Fellow in NUIG and was recently selected as a 2020 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World honoree in the category of medical innovation.

Omar Salam participated in SciFest@College a number of times and qualified for the National Final two years in a row, in 2016 and 2017. At the SciFest 2017 National Final Omar won the THEA Award. Omar is currently studying Aerospace Engineering in Queens University Belfast.

Ruth Madden is in 6th year in Largy College, Clones, Co. Monaghan. She was awarded the THEA Award for her project ‘The Microplastic Filter - A Small Solution to a Global Problem’ at the SciFest 2019 National Final. Representing SciFest at the Hong Kong Global Youth Science and Technology Bowl in August Ruth won the Gold Award in the Physics and Engineering category.
