Irish Students Aiming for Global Success at International Science Fair!

Five Students to Participate in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2021

Donegal Student Eoghan Ó Fearáin to Participate in the Broadcom MASTERS International Programme

SciFest SFI STEM Champion, Caoimhín O’Leary, a fifth-year student from Ard Scoil na Mara, Tramore Co. Waterford will represent Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2021, which will be held online from May 10-21. Competing also at this prestigious international competition will be the SciFest 2020 Runner-up Award winner Conor Casey, Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine, Kenmare, Co. Kerry and Dara Newsome, Conor Bradshaw and David Hughes, Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Dara, Conor and David won both the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award and the Intel Technology Grand Award at the SciFest 2020 National Final last November.

Regeneron ISEF unites the top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where highly qualified scientists review and judge their work. ISEF was founded in 1950 by Science Service (now the Society for Science) and was sponsored by the Intel Corporation from 1997 to 2019. Last year Regeneron Pharmaceuticals became the title sponsor of ISEF but, due to COVID-19, the fair had to move online. The event included a number of speakers of the highest calibre, focusing on topics ranging from COVID-19 to entrepreneurship to being a woman in STEM. The normal project competition element of the fair was cancelled but finalists were given the opportunity to participate in a number of exciting activities and have their abstracts published online.

This year’s ISEF will again take place online. It is anticipated that almost 1,800 finalists representing 389 affiliated fairs from 65 countries, regions and territories and the 50 states of the U.S. will be involved. Judging will take place from May 3-6, 2021 via video conferencing. Official Regeneron ISEF events will take place from May 16-21, featuring distinguished panels, the Finalist Exhibit Hall, a Career Hall, the ISEF College Fair and a STEM Experiential Hall. At the moment SciFest’s five ISEF finalists are busy putting the finishing touches to their project boards and designing their quad charts. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Caoimhín, Conor, Dara, Conor and David on the work they have done so far. We are confident that they will do Ireland and SciFest proud at Regeneron ISEF 2021.

This is the third year that SciFest has been invited to select a junior cycle student, ranging in age from 12 to 14, to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS International which aims to bring together the world’s brightest middle school students. Each delegate is chosen for their excellence in science, engineering and leadership. They are rising stars who come together to represent their nations for this international exchange. The students participate together in specialised programming, fun and engaging hands-on science and engineering activities, and attend activities at Regeneron ISEF. This year’s cohort will consist of 25 Broadcom MASTERS delegates from 22 countries, regions, and territories. Congratulations to Eoghan Ó Fearáin, a second-year student from Coláiste Ailigh, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal who was selected by the judges at the SciFest 2020 National Final to represent Ireland at the Broadcom MASTERS International 2021.

Participation at Regeneron ISEF and Broadcom MASTERS and indeed SciFest itself would not happen without the support of teachers and parents. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who continue to motivate, guide and encourage so many young people to participate in SciFest. The programme has showcased around 90,000 students’ projects over the past 15 years, and many of those students have continued their studies and gone on to pursue a career in a STEM field.
