Students win SciFest STEM Outreach Award 2020 after 60,000 votes cast

Congratulations to Aishling Reeves and Nadia O'Sullivan from Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, Blarney, Co. Cork who were the winners of this year's SciFest STEM Outreach Award 2020. They received more than 20,000 votes for their video.

The SciFest STEM Outreach Award is an opportunity for the SciFest National Finalists to communicate their findings via a 2-minute online video. The video with the most votes cast via the SciFest National Final website, wins The STEM Outreach Award and €300.

This year over 60,000 votes were cast, a significant increase from the 41,000 votes cast last year. The videos were live for two weeks and during that period 156 hours of the students' videos were watched. This emphasised not only the quality of the video presentations but also the public interest in the students' projects.

Aishling and Nadia's project, S.I.D.S. Temperature Monitor, focused on building a temperature monitor using an Arduino microcontroller on some basic electronic components to combat the problem of cot death (or SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The project and message delivered by Aishling and Nadia clearly resonated with the public, carrying them to victory in the poll.

In an age of increasing misinformation, excellent and concise communication in STEM has never been more important. All 16 of the finalists who entered the SciFest STEM Outreach Award component of the National Final had not only great projects but also possessed an exceptional ability to communicate their findings to the general public with incredible clarity, confidence and passion. Well done to all.
