The SciFest@College 2018 STEM fairs take place at 16 venues around the country between April and June. The closing date for entries to SciFest@College 2018 was Friday 16 March 2018 except in the case of SciFest@NorthWest in St Mary's College, Derry, where the entry date is Friday 11 May 2018.

Note: An award may not be presented if, in the opinion of the judges, no project meeting the criteria for the particular award is of sufficient standard to merit the award.

 

Award Criteria (SciFest@College regional level competition)

Science Foundation Ireland Best Project Award

This award is presented to the overall best project.

The Best Project Award Winners from the SciFest@College 2018 regional STEM fairs will participate in a national final competition on 9 November 2018.

Participants in the national final will compete for the SciFest 2018 Science Foundation Ireland ISEF Award. This award consists of a trophy and an all-expenses-paid trip for the winning student(s) and their mentor to represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2019.

The winner of this award should be capable of taking the project further and competing at an international level.

 

Abbott Runner-up Best Project Award

This award is presented to the overall second-best project.

The best of the runners-up from the regional events will also participate in the national final and compete for the SciFest 2018 Science Foundation Ireland ISEF Award. Following the completion of the regional SciFest@College 2018 STEM fairs the runners-up will be invited to submit their project report books to SciFest CLG. A panel of judges appointed by SciFest will assess the projects, based on the report books, and select the projects to go forward to participate in the National Final 2018.

 

Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award

This award is presented to the project that best demonstrates:

  • Understanding of a problem/unanswered question related to science or engineering in the field of medical devices
  • Understanding of an area where you have experience or are aware of something to help / improve /change a person’s quality of life who may have a medical need - parent / sister / brother / grandparent / class mate
  • A contribution to the medical device field through research/experimentation

The best of the winners of this award at the regional fairs will compete at the National Final for the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award.

Following the completion of the regional SciFest@College 2018 STEM fairs the winners of this award will be invited to submit their project report books to SciFest CLG. A panel of judges appointed by Boston Scientific and SciFest will assess the projects, based on the report books, and select the projects to go forward to compete for the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award at the National Final 2018.

 

Intel Award

This prize is awarded to the best project in the Physical Sciences and Technology categories. If the overall best project or the runner-up is awarded in either the Physical Sciences or the Technology category this prize is awarded to the next best project in these categories.

 

Environmental Award

This award is presented to the best project with an environmental theme. Topics investigated could include energy conservation, renewable energy, climate change, air or water quality, waste management, etc.

 

Newstalk Best Communicator Award

This award may be presented to either a group or an individual. The recipient(s) of this award should demonstrate exceptional ability in effectively communicating their findings to the judges both orally and visually.

 

BioPharmaChem Ireland Chemistry Award

This award is presented to the project with the best chemistry content; it may be made in any of the 3 categories.

 

Discover Space Award

The European Space Education Resource Office Ireland (ESERO Ireland) is a project co-funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the European Space Agency. The aim of the project is to use space as a theme to support the teaching of science and maths through the provision of resources, inspirational materials and training for teachers.

Criteria: The award is presented to the project which best uses Space as a theme in science, technology or maths. Space education information and resources are available from www.esero.ie.

 

Maths in Science Award

This award is presented to the project with the best use of maths; it may be made in any of the 3 categories.

 

Irish Science Teachers' Association Award

This award is presented to the best project in the Junior Category. If the Science Foundation Ireland Best Project Award winner or Abbott Runner-up is from the junior category the prize will be awarded to the next best project in the category.

Excellence in STEM Awards. Engraved plaques.

Intel Teacher of Excellence Award. This award will be presented to the teacher of the student(s) who win(s) the SciFest 2018 Science Foundation Ireland ISEF Award. The winning teacher receives an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona, in May 2019. Sponsored by Intel Ireland.

Additional Award

Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award. Engraved trophy and an award to the value of €500. Sponsored by Boston Scientific Galway.

This award is only available to winners of the regional Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award. Competitors for the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award will be pre-selected on the basis of their project report books. Following the completion of the regional SciFest@College 2018 STEM fairs the winners of the Boston Scientific Medical Devices award at these fairs will be requested to forward their project report books to SciFest CLG. A panel of judges representing SciFest and Boston Scientific will assess the projects, based on the report books, and select the projects to go forward to compete for the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award at the National Final 2018.
